Referring to our previous post it is often said by companies that their employees are their best asset yet too often they fail to show appreciation of effort. Smaller companies are probably better at doing so purely because the boss is nearer the “coalface”. To larger companies employees are merely a large fixed cost which the accountants want to reduce.
It is no surprise then that employees have no pride in, or allegiance to, their employer with surveys showing a mere 40% proud to work for their company. Most cite a lack of job satisfaction or recognition of effort as the main reason.
Much of this is due to poor trading conditions and a resultant lack of spending as accountants contain costs. The result is that employees’ efforts go unrecognized, opportunities for career advancement disappear and staff become demotivated and uncaring.
As recruiters we have seen a considerable increase in candidates approaching us saying that their current company have frozen their pay, reduced bonuses or that they can see no obvious opportunity for progression, in many cases all three.
The truth is that the best employees will always be in demand as another company will see their value and be prepared to offer an appropriate salary package for their skills. It is necessary to continually challenge and motivate these individuals or risk losing them. Any company imposing pay freezes or reducing bonuses is effectively committing commercial suicide.
So if you are disillusioned with your job, feel the company does not value you and are perhaps being asked to do more work for the same money it is probably time to start looking for a new job. Believe it or not there are good opportunities out there but competition is fierce.
