This is called The Peter Principle, where employees rise to "their level of incompetence".

I'm sure I've seen examples of it in practice too.

What a farce the budget was. I was watching as Osbourne delivered his speech and was not impressed, what made it worse was when Millipede stood up to respond and you could see the smirking, smug faces of Balls and Harman nodding their heads like those horrible nodding dogs on the parcel shelf of a Chav's car, all you needed was the fluffy dice to complete the picture.

"Seeing the commuters trudging parking in our road then trudging up to the station to get a train to London I am reminded of the film Schindler’s list and the utter despair on the faces of those boarding the trains to the camps, they look no happier on their return trip."

Wow, I agree that many people look pretty miserable on the morning commute into London, but are things THAT bad?

Oh well, at least they do get a train home at the end of the day.

Much as I sometimes moan about the daily commute, I tend to use the time pretty well to read a book or study the modules of my distance learning course. It helps to break the monotony.

David this has been part of the problem that we have to get over. We have a lot of good strong candidates, but some HR departments demand a degree and will not even look at someone without, even if they have 20 years hands on experience.

As a non degree educated job seeker I must concur that many recruiters and companies use the degree as a default filter. This not only overlooks many talented younger candidates but excludes those experienced older candidates whose education was completed when attaining a degree was not seen as the norm. There is often too, no requirement that the degree has any relevance to the advertised position.
Interestingly, the Evening Standard has run a campaign to get unemployed youngsters placed as apprentices and banks such as Goldman Sachs have taken on a number of these. They may not start on the big salaries but I bet in 10 years time some of these will have more knowledge and achieve just as much as their degree educated contempories.

Hi Rick, I couldn't agree more. That is why I have found taster half days very helpful in place of a second interview - something that is very hands on. Some jobs are hard to describe in reality. If the candidate thinks that we are trying to get them for free for half a day then we don't want them as they are too naive to understand that in half a day we will be expending more effort than they will. Part of the session will be shadowing, part will be seeing how they get on in reality and does their CV stand-up to practical scrutiny. Not suitable for all roles of course, but is a generally good experience for employer and potential employee.
